Inventors, businessmen, scientists, explorers all had their part to play in the story of the Industrial Revolution and in this Brief History Thomas Crump brings their story to life, and shows why it is a chapter in English history that can not be ignored.Previous praise for Thomas Crump s A Brief History of Science: A serious and fully furnished history of science, from which anyone interested in the development of ideas . . . will greatly profit. 4 Sciences sociales et humainesIndex. décimale : 303.4 Changements sociaux : classer ici la futurologie Note de contenu : In this new book, Bauman examines how we have moved away from a ′heavy′ and ′solid′, hardware–focused modernity to a ′light′ and ′liquid′, software–based modernity. This passage, he argues, has brought profound change to all aspects of the human condition. The new remoteness and un–reachability of global systemic structure coupled with the unstructured and under–defined, fluid state of the immediate setting of life–politics and human togetherness, call for the rethinking of the concepts and cognitive frames used to narrate human individual experience and their joint history.
This book is dedicated to this task. Bauman selects five of the basic concepts which have served to make sense of shared human life – emancipation, individuality, time/space, work and community – and traces their successive incarnations and changes of meaning.Nature du document : Documentaire Genre : Fait de société Réservation

4 Sciences sociales et humaines:4.35 Population:Répartition par âge:Groupe d'âge:EnfanceIndex. décimale : 303.62 Violence, désordre, terrorisme Note de contenu : This Global Survey conducted by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children confirms that recommendations made in the 2006 UN Study on Violence against Children (VAC) are as urgent as they were at the time of the Study's release and continue to serve as a fundamental reference for child protection initiatives the world over. It highlights some progress including awareness raising laws and policies to prevent and address VAC. However, progress has been slow, uneven and too fragmented to bring violence to an end. Most children exposed to violence live in isolation, loneliness, and fear and do not know where to turn for help, especially when the perpetrator is someone close and on whom they depend for their protection and well-being. Governments must increase efforts to practice these recommendations identified in the 2006 UN Study to make them a reality for every child in every country. This comprehensive survey provides important examples of initiatives that successfully shield children from violence and address the attitudes that allow it to flourish. It is being issued as Member States deepen their efforts to define a post-2015 development agenda and ensure an appropriate institutional response. Nature du document : Documentaire Réservation
