It tells the story of Charles Ryder's infatuation with the Marchmains and the rapidly-disappearing world of privilege they inhabit. Enchanted first by Sebastian at Oxford, then by his doomed Catholic family, in particular his remote sister, Julia, Charles comes finally to recognize only his spiritual and social distance from them. Titre : The Complete Short Stories Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Evelyn Waugh, Auteur Editeur : New York- London- Toronto : Everyman´s Library Année de publication : 2000 Importance : 595p ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-85715-190-9 Langues : Anglais Langues originales : Anglais Résumé : The greatest English comic novelist of the twentieth century produced a considerable body of shorter fiction, including several master-pieces, notably Mr Loveday's Little Outing and Scott-King's Modern Europe. These stories have all Waugh's characteristically brilliant, savage wit and reproduce his unmistakeable world in miniature. They also constitute a vital supplement to the major novels, while standing up as significant works in their own right. Two chapters of Waugh's tantalizingly unfinished novel Work Suspended are also included. This edition brings back into print 17 stories that have long been unavailable in England and America. Format : 21 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-316-21626-5 Langues : Anglais Langues originales : Anglais Résumé : Laced with cynicism and truth, "A Handful of Dust" satirizes a certain stratum of English life where all the characters have money, but lack practically every other credential. Murderously urbane, it depicts the breakup of a marriage in the London gentry, where the errant wife suffers from terminal boredom, and becomes enamoured of a social parasite and professional luncheon-goer.
Vanaf 13 jaar.
