This revised edition includes a new introduction by the author, who reflects on materials in the Rosa Parks estate, purchased by Howard Buffett in 2014 and opened to the public at the Library of Congress in February 2015. Theoharis contextualizes this rich material--made available to the public for the very first time and including more than seven thousand documents--and deepens our understanding of Parks's personal, financial, and political struggles. Presenting a powerful corrective to the popular iconography of Rosa Parks as the quiet seamstress who with a single act birthed the modern civil rights movement, scholar Jeanne Theoharis excavates Parks's political philosophy and six decades of activism. Theoharis masterfully details the political depth of a national heroine who dedicated her life to fighting American inequality and, in the process, resurrects a civil rights movement radical who has been hidden in plain sight far too long. 6 Politique, droit et économie:6.20 Relations internationales:Relations internationalesIndex. décimale : 327.16 Conflits internationaux Note de contenu : In the second decade of each century, a new global order commonly starts to assert itself. In the 19th, Napoleon's defeat gave birth to the world of rivalrous European powers. In the 20th, the First World War triggered a wave of revolutions that cleared a path for the American era. Ours appears to be no different.
The world is once again on the move: China extends its influence across the globe; Europe is struggling to maintain unity and the United States looks hollowed out by its own past adventures. Meanwhile Russia is up to a lot of startlingly bold new tricks.
In this expanded new edition of The World in Conflict, John Andrews tackles head-on the reasons why global violence is ever-present in our lives. He analyses every single one of today's major conflicts region by region, considering the causes, contexts, participants, impacts and likely outcomes. He looks at recently-ended wars that still spawn intermittent fighting. And he considers where, why and how new conflicts might erupt.
This is a must-read for our interesting times, a guide to our new world of terrorism, kompromat and cyber war, shifting powers and enduring strife. If you want to know who is fighting where, for what, and whether they can win, The World in Conflict is indispensable.Nature du document : Documentaire Réservation

With poignant black-and-white photos, original articles from the New York Times, and a unique personal viewpoint, this is a moving tribute to the men and women on whose shoulders Obama stood. Until recently, though, such claims have not been supported by easily accessed texts of speeches and addresses. With this first-of-its-kind anthology, Davis W. Houck and David E. Dixon present thirty-nine full-text addresses by women who spoke out while the struggle was at its most intense. Beginning with the Brown decision in 1954 and extending through the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the editors chronicle the unique and important rhetorical contributions made by such well-known activists as Ella Baker, Fannie Lou Hamer, Daisy Bates, Lillian Smith, Mamie Till-Mobley, Lorraine Hansberry, Dorothy Height, and Rosa Parks. They also include speeches from lesser-known but influential leaders such as Della Sullins, Marie Foster, Johnnie Carr, Jane Schutt, and Barbara Posey. Nearly every speech was discovered in local, regional, or national archives, and many are published or transcribed from audiotape here for the first time. Houck and Dixon introduce each speaker and occasion with a headnote highlighting key biographical and background details. The editors also provide a general introduction that places these public addresses in context. Women and the Civil Rights Movement, 1954-1965 gives voice to stalwarts whose passionate orations were vital to every phase of a movement that changed America. It identifies the main feminist influences that have shaped the movement liberal, radical, third world and cosmopolitan and exposes how the Western, legalist, state-centric, and liberal biases of mainstream human rights discourse impede the realisation of human rights in womens lives everywhere.
The book traces the evolution of the womens human rights movement through an examination of its key issues, debates, and practical interventions in international law and policy arenas. This includes efforts to:
Develop global gender equality norms via the UN Womens Convention
Frame violence against women as a human rights issue
Address gender-based crimes in conflict situations, include women in conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction, and challenge new forms of militarism
Highlight the gendered human rights dimensions of widening inequalities in a context of neo-liberal globalisation
Develop human rights responses to anti-feminist fundamentalist movements with a focus on reproductive and sexual rights
Ultimately, Women's Human Rights reaffirms a commitment to critically reinterpreted universal human rights principles and demonstrates the vital role that bottom-up, transnational movements play in making them a reality in women's lives.Nature du document : Documentaire Réservation

6 Politique, droit et économie:6.15 Politique et gouvernement:Mouvement politique:RévolutionIndex. décimale : 323 Droits civils et politiques : classer ici les droits de l'homme Note de contenu : The Civil Rights Revolution carries Bruce Ackerman's sweeping reinterpretation of constitutional history into the era beginning with Brown v. Board of Education. From Rosa Parks's courageous defiance, to Martin Luther King's resounding cadences in "I Have a Dream," to Lyndon Johnson's leadership of Congress, to the Supreme Court's decisions redefining the meaning of equality, the movement to end racial discrimination decisively changed our understanding of the Constitution.
"The Civil Rights Act turns 50 this year, and a wave of fine books accompanies the semicentennial. Ackerman's is the most ambitious; it is the third volume in an ongoing series on American constitutional history called We the People. A professor of law and political science at Yale, Ackerman likens the act to a constitutional amendment in its significance to the country's legal development."
-Michael O'Donnell, The Atlantic
"Ackerman weaves political theory with historical detail, explaining how the civil rights movement evolved from revolution to mass movement and then to statutory law...This fascinating book takes a new look at a much-covered topic."
